New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Ramones and The Stooges were largely apolitical (Sex Pistols was very abstract anarchy), but put off conservatives at the time by their aesthetic alone. Ramones were like 50/50 conservative to liberal. They had an anti-commie song but they also had an anti-Reagan song, I think the bandmates clashed a bit. Earlier poto-punks were usually hippies or just the original hipsters, most notably Lou Reed who was bisexual, fucked trannies and stuff. Post-punk was again flamboyant often which by default put-off conservatives, but not really political. Politics came into scene in the late 70s and then the 80s, especially with the hardcore punk. Minor Threat and especially Dead Kennedy's. The earliest punk wasn't actually super well defined, The Stooges / Iggy Pop was really just a rockstar aesthetically, same with Ramones. Sex Pistols were basically created to promote a new fashion trend lol, and that fashion trend ended up evolving into the "punk aesthetic" everyone knows, with mohawks and shit, it flourished in the 80s which was like second to third punk wave in fact.
