Cera as Scott Pilgrim was a miscast made specially to spite the fans, they did this because they thought if they made him accurate to his comic book looks people would sympathize with him without realizing how shitty of a person he is. Ironically it seems it had the opposite effect, so if they went with a more attractive actor, they would probably get the point across easier.
Really Scott Pilgrim is a guy you still see a lot out there in the big cities, guy in a shitty band that preys on underage girls. So, the overall takeaway of the series is that all characters are objectively shitty people that all deserve each other, just like everyone else in the indie music scene IRL.
