So what was the message of KEK? That drinking in moderation is good and the best way to endure the depressing Scandinavian life, but if you overdo it and become an alcoholic it will ruin you?

They were all middle aged dads/guys who lost the zest for life. They thought that it was the drinking that brought them joy and excitement in their younger days but it was that they were young men hanging out and looking forward to a limitless future.
The initial “success” of the test was that they felt like young men again. Hanging out together, doing something fun/against the rules, something that was their secret. And the possibility of success again meant the future was limitless.
But then too much drinking, consequences, death, etc.
I think the point wasn’t booze in moderation, but rather excitement and life comes from discovery, community, and “living life” not falling into routine and taking the safest path to a “normal life”.
Or idk, maybe don’t leave your shit around the workplace and don’t piss yourself in front of your wife and kids.

But the piano player keeps drinking in moderation and gets a gf and even help a struggling student to pass the exam. To me that sounds like it was the drinking that brought him joy. The football coach just went too far into it and also too late. By the time he started drinking again, he was already too old and his life was finished.

Haven’t seen it in awhile so don’t know all the details but you are mixing up cause and effect. The drinking when they were young didn’t cause the energy. They drank because they felt alive.
When they were older, they started to feel alive by coming together, experimenting/trying something new. Something different, something wrong. They stopped living in their rut. Again the drinking wasn’t the “cause” of them feeling alive, they just associated it with feeling alive.

I think the message of the film, was that for some people, drinking is the perfect medicine, and should be embraced as part of their cultural identity [in moderation]. For other people it will be the key to their destruction, and should be avoided at all cost. The main character played by Mikkelsen is caught right in the middle, and has to balance it perfectly, he will either shine bright or fade away, and its a tight rope to walk.

After 20y of binge blackout drinking I have finally learned to sip in moderation. Last night I drank little whisky, little coqnac and little apple cider. I was tipsy but not drink. I woke up without hangover and feel good about myself.
