Its trying too hard.

It was all over the place.
Adaptations of a decent book don't always translate to a decent movie.

>What went wrong?
there was a lot of mumbling and whispering. it was literally too difficult to understand what people were saying.

apart from that its an easy 7/10

Great movie. See the 70 print if you have the chance.

>Joaquin Phoenix enters a room
>He interrogates a person about a different person
>He leaves the room
>Rinse and repeat
It's not even that there's 5 plotlines since a coherent plot doesn't necessarily make for a great film. It's that it's just not a fulfilling watch.

Doc's supposed to be stumbling into lead after lead. In the novel, he's allowed to go down the wrong path before the synchronicities snap him back. The film feels like it's just poorly written with all the conveniences

I think you got to be in the right mood for it and interested in the weirdness of california during the early 70's. That moment when the hippy stuff was starting to turn to shit.
If you liked boogie nights and licorice pizza you'll probably like inherent vice.
it doesnt have much mass appeal.

First time I watched it I couldn't hear half of the lines and couldn't really follow it but I was a fan of the book so i gave it another chance and loved it.

Belladonna's the only thing I remember from this movie

this

i actually found that getting stoned whilst watching it lessened its value. too difficult to keep tabs on whats going on or remembering stuff

belladonna's one of those porn actresses that I wish did nicer stuff. She's hot and I don't really want to watch her getting gang-fucked by a pack of "outstanding african Americans" or having her asshole prolapsed. I wish she did more vanilla stuff

>She's hot
she's not though, she's like a 50th percentile porn whore at best and the reason she got work was she did more extreme stuff than the average

Incoherent shit. But I just never liked PTA's movies. There Will Be Blood included.
Anonymous No.214029805 >>214029889
The movie only makes sense if you read the book, also pinecones style doesn't really fit the screen as he usually goes in these tangents and subplots and imagery that is hard to put into film
Anonymous No.214029833
Katherine Waterston's mighty bush is what I remember from that movie.

I think it's great, never understood the disdain it gets.

I didnt read the book and understood it perfectly. /tv/ is just full of illiterates. IV has a great message and covers the period of time some called "the last wave of human expression" before everything was turned into a great pysop.

Pine Cone doesn't write stories, he writes post modern parody quirk chungus pulp love letters. It's a chore to read and hard to care about since there's nothing underneath the five dollar words and intentionally incomprehensible plot, shockingly that doesn't translate well to the screen no matter how pretty you make it look

I dont remember anything from this movie except it was boring and woahkim sleeps on a couch

I have yet to see a PTA movie that I enjoyed. I appreciate his work but I don't like it. Same with Tarantino but at least I liked Reservoir Dogs and OUATIH. I can't say I liked any of PTA's movies. DDL's performance in There Will Be Blood carries it but it's just because it's so goofy

And this one of his more coherent and conventional books.

Love the guy though there's nerds getting PhDs in understanding his work and he said himself it's all incoherent rambling on LSD he doesn't understand any of it.

I tried to read V. and Gravity's rainbow, couldn't finish either. Inherent vice and Crying of Lot 49 are good tho

part of the meta humor of pynchon is the people who take him way too seriously. gravity's rainbow is hilarious but not nearly as funny as the pseuds who swear it's so deep and meaningful.

punch drunk love was the only PTA movie I instantly loved, but the master/twbb/inherent vice get better every time i watch them. magnolia is the only one i've seen which i don't care to give a second chance

I'd go a step further and say that reading the book can tangle you up in knots that make the movie harder to follow. The first time I watched it was right after finishing the book, and I was too distracted by trying to reconcile the plot in my head with the plot in the film to really follow it. On a second watch months later it all clicked and became one of my favorite PTA films

>Joaquin Phoenix slapping Kathryn Waterston's ass
>all Josh Brolin scenes
