It's pretty retarded to suggest they'd leave the country a no go zone permanently, that's a lot of land. There'd be a lot of resources and inventory to collect. There's no reason to assume a battalion of US Marines with full Naval logistics backing them couldn't completely wipe out the infected population.

There is not an entire country's worth of land arguably just up for grabs. The British diaspora would lack any meaningful representation given how many appear to have died or got left behind. Other major powers would be weighing how to just take it, and a country like the United States would eventually make a move. It doesn't even have to be a rash move. You could pulverize the island for a year with bombing runs and gunships, then send clean up crews, then just leave it unattended for years to be sure. Eventually, the island would be claimed by some other world power.

In 28 Weeks Later the US army essentially does have the virus contained and people are returning to the UK, but the entire movie rests on the premise of them being completely incompetent and letting it break out and explode again. In any case, I don't think the idea in the franchise was ever that the UK would become a permanent no go, more just keeping it shut until it was reasonable that all the infected had died out. That's borderline the plot of the second movie, they wait until it's nearly died out. You don't send troops into a country with 60 million infected rage crazed monsters.

Don't even necessarily agree with the other guy but that's not really true. Most land is valuable. Most "empty space" you refer to is owned by one party or another. There isn't just endless unclaimed land in the world, that has not been true for a long time. The only places nobody wants land in are deserts, tundras and the like. Most land has some use or some resource.

the worldbuilding is so dumb, the virus wouldn't last long after some quarantine since they decompose at the same rate of a body. Not to mention it's incredibly easy to build settlements since not everyone's infected by default, and the only way to turn is to get bitten, and turning happens almost instantly
