Not on a mass production level. But things are certainly heading in that direction, with a lot of self driving cars being put through various testing states. AI will advance enough to make it a thing. As a whole, KITT will still look advanced, but also more plausible. The AI self driving angle will make KITT more incognito, and possibly give the movie some better opponents.

Just because driver less AI powered cars are becoming more of a reality doesn't mean that KITT can't be some level of AI beyond everything else out there. But still trying to impress audiences with a 'super duper enhanced' car is harder to do now than it was in 1982. Not only would the actor have charisma, but the car personality would too. The OG KITT was voiced by William Daniels, who many might recognise as Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World. He did add a lot of back and forth dialogue for David Hasslehoff to engage with. So, it wasn't just David Hasslehoff holding the show together.

I rewatched it all last year. It works because of hasslehoff. Sometimes it's just him in the car pretending to talk to the car, and his breezy smile makes it work. You can't recreate that, it's either there or it's not

Knight Rider 2000 was really just a back door pilot to what could have been a new series. The made for TV movie was a complete bait and switch. Advertise the show as the return of KITT and Michael Knight, along with Devon. Shift the storyline over to the new characters Shawn McCormick (The replacement for Knight) and Maddox (The replacement for Devon). The voice of KITT was the only aspect that did not change. The rating were huge for NBC, as it was seen as a Knight Rider reunion. There was also a lot of negative criticism that killed the prospects of a TV series based on the TV movie. David Hasslehoff called it a mistake. I don't think it is really cannon to anything, as it was already set in a weird fictional year 2000. I think it is a neat 'what if' type of scenario. But it was abandoned.
