was the point just that there are levels of power and wealth even above the relative top that the sopranos occupy and that was disturbing to AJ? or was it that he felt used because of his proximity to his dad? I didn't get the impression that it was the latter

It's a bit of both. If AJ wasn't Tony Soprano's son, they wouldn't be as fascinated with him. Also the fact that the Sopranos are just mild millionaires reinforces the fact that the mob is a shadow of its former self.
They still date into Season 5. She's at Carmela's dad's birthday and the finale where AJ hosts the party. They probably separated once they went to different colleges.

AJ being exposed to real wealth and power highlights the futility of Tony’s lifestyle for him. He has to live with the knowledge that his dad is a wanted killer, he sees his family and family friends criminal activity being openly discussed constantly. He has to deal with FBI raids on his house, his dad being arrested, guns and tens of thousands of dollars inside of his walls, his dads crazy maniac mood swings and shitty fathering and, worst of all, the knowledge that his dad will inevitably end up either dead or in the can and for what? A house that would fit inside his girlfriend’s living room? Her Dad was born into the right family and has a man employed only for the purpose of opening the gate, and A.J is constantly surrounded by chaos and violence for barely a tenth of what real old money has. A.Js a spoiled piece of shit and he probably didn’t appreciate being worse off than someone who didn’t have to make any of the sacrifices he or his family dide
