My understanding of Solarpunk is it's literally just a fantasy aesthetic of clean futuristic buildings, balanced with natural greenery, bright sunshine, and generally a sparkly optimistic future
solar panels tend to be a feature of the aesthetic.
blue, green, white color palette with golden sunshine

It's hardly any deeper than that
but it an aesthetic that gets co-opted by all kinds of retarded incompatible ideologies and political camps

What stories could you set in a Solarpunk setting? That's the problem with utopias as a setting. There's no conflict, and in order to have a story you need to have a conflict. Even Star Trek had to ultimately inject conflict from the outside in the form of aliens. All the episodes set on Earth are painfully fucking boring.

higher maintenance costs in deserts
nobody lives there so maintenance towns would have to be made and continually staffed
lots of losses incurred by having to send excess generated by the panels elsewhere
and panels can never be baseload while an efficient power storage system is not available

as it stands the best option as of yet is gas compression storage and people really dont like that because it essentially requires you to make several bombs underneath the city you are attempting to power

r/fuckcars commies jerk off about how cool it would be to have solarpunk stories instead of actually writing interesting solarpunk stories because there are none. Captivating stories are built around conflict. Cyberpunk has conflict at every level of society. In a cyberpunk city there are a million little plotlines that could be going on. Solarpunk is a self congratulatory premise about having solved all the conflicts already.
Also so fucking gay to make a "punk" and just expect the stories to spawn instead of making a story that popularizes it in the first place.

Cyberpunk ironically is about finding freedom in dystopic cyber-future oppression.
Solarpunk, ideally (and in my understanding of its origins) is about being free, in a future that finds balance with nature. Usually rebuilding after some kind of apocalypse which represents the oppression of the past.
Communism is dystopic and has no place in Solarpunk.

Farms, residential structures, power generaion, etc. are all separated for the same reason your toilet and kitchen are separated and you have one big fridge instead of a minifridge in every room.

Each one gives increasing returns when you put a lot of it together, and the needs of each interfere with each other at a fundamental level. Making the civilizations they depict in those gay concept art pieces would be extremely wasteful in so many ways.

It's basically a child's mentality of how to increasing efficiency but we should expect nothing less from redditors.

Only the boomer ones who are running on cold war paranoia about nuclear proliferation. Who still think nuclear reactors can detonate like nuclear bombs and produce green glowing goo as waste.
Most leftists these days are in favor of nuclear. Some of them are still afraid of nuclear waste, but then you teach them about how recycling nuclear waste has been a solved problem for decades and they are instantly on your side.

Leftists are big on stopping climate change and we're at the point where we can't wait for magical tech solutions to drop out of the sky. We have to use what we have and do it at scale.

There is no such thing as "Solarpunk", it was an attempted post hoc narrative rewrite of millenial discord trannies and 40 something chapotraphouse patrons (but I repeat myself) on twitter getting embarrassingly emotional about a literal yogurt ad and unironically advocating for it as their serious vision for the future. Just look at the fucking comments:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-Ng5ZvrDm4

Even then 90% of what got them was the idea of an implied matriarchal, sexless, infantilized society lazily provided over by (ambiguously but acceptably) brown (ambiguously but acceptably) butch women with white men (or physically strong, potentially intimidating men in general but especially white men) basically nonexistent in any sort of prominent role dressed up in a cutesy nonthreatening aesthetic lifted from the handful of the most entry level Ghibli movies. Also a few token windmills and solar panels to show we're living in harmony with nature y'all!
