I actually would like to see a series that continues the Operative's life, like a miniseries or a special episode. He's basically in the exact same spot character wise Mal was in the original series and he could get his own crew of weirdos together to do jobs.

Nobody was really hunting Mal until he took on the Tams. Mal as a criminal was somebody nobody cared about because he was bitter and broken and saw the war as over. But once he got his hands on secrets that could spark another civil war? that made him a wanted man. The series, if we take the movie as the end goal of the character development, was going to be about Mal, driven to the edge by the Purple Bellies tightening their grip on the rimworlds, rediscovering his beliefs and leading some sort of new Browncoat revolution against 'Parliament', probably taking River on as some sort of protégé judging from how he treated her in the last scene.

We were this close to getting to watch the Space South rise again and then Fox ruined it..

You can take and make anything fictional work if you strip all reality out of it. I can't imagine literal slavery was an issue for the Browncoats conflict, it's inspiration but not the same. Anyway you realize that outside of America, history class teaches us about more than just slavuhree and the hall of cost, right? So we don't think Hitler was a demonic antichrist figure, he was just a guy who ruled a country for like a decade. Same with slavery. Lots of countries had it, lots of countries went to war over slaves. Some countries still do.

It's crazy how many americans literally cannot name a single historical event outside of slavery and WWII. Like, I would wager the average mutt doesn't know who Napoleon was, or that there was a different World War in the 1910s.
