What are some must see non-Jackie Chan 80's and 90's Hong Kong film industry action movies?

Every HK John Woo movie, especially A better Tomorrow (watch this 1st it started Chow-Yun Fat's career), The Killer, and Hard Boiled.
>God of Gamblers (only seen the first 2)
>Sex and Zen
>City on Fire
>Lucky Stars series & Aces Go Places series (YMMV on how much you can tolerate Chinese comedy)
>Once Upon a Time In China
Fuck the CCP into Hell for what they did to China, and especially what they did to HK.

He was already hugely popular in HK from his long running TV career before he got into movies.

I literally just watched Hard Boiled for the first time two nights ago and holy fucking fuc,, was that ever a ride. Just bodies flying everywhere, unapologetic blood, explosions, gun fights. Jesus...and it all culminates in a baby piss joke. Like, what fucking absolute kino.

As for Sleeping Dogs, man...talk about a tough break. Can't get a sequel, can't even get Donnie Yen to save the movie ever getting made, can't get the movie made to make a sequel possible. Everyone wants one because of how slick the game was, even if it was just a shabby GTA clone in parts what with the wonky camera and everything. However, there's just more that could be done witht aht setting and that series and it just sucks that we're never going to get a sequel, never mind one in film form.

Huh, I had no idea. I meant to write "kick-started" as I was pretty sure it wasn't his 1st movie. I know that ABT made him a star, enough so that guys were copying his trench coat look even in sweltering HK summer. Hell the ABT trench coat is iconic enough to be parodied in Black Lagoon. Any HK tv series recommendations? A Condor Heroes tv series would rule.

This is true, but it is also true that it broke him into being a blockbuster action star. So to a foreigner who will never watch his television output, the guy is correct.

>can't even get Donnie Yen to save the movie ever getting made
I resent Donnie for holding onto the hole even into his 60s. I think Wei Shen would be the perfect character to have a mainstream Hong Kong kungfu movie for American audiences but Donnie just stopped fitting the role.
And I know this board hates Simu Liu with a passion but c'mon.

This John Woo flick is crazy cause it takes place in Vietnam during the war.

I don't think /tv/ hates him. The problem with Simu Liu is that everyone knows he's redditor with an inferiority complex. It's hard to respect someone who doesn't respect himself.
He will never be believable as an action hero now.

Any other Benny the Jet fans? Dude was so great as a villain in some of Jackie Chan’s best movies.

Its the best open world crime game. Its not too open to the point you get side tracked but enough detail to put you in a whole different world. It blows GTA 4 and 5 out of the water.
