People are surprised by this whole thing but it comes as no surprise to me. In the mid 2000s to mid 2010s I was obsessed with the band Korn (of all things kek) and trying to build a complete digital archive of all their shit, and I learned exactly the same lessons about human nature firsthand. When you start getting really deep into the rabbit hole and finding out about these things that would now be called "lost media" it leads you on a crazy trail. Some good eggs are really forthcoming with their stuff. There were dudes on Discogs who would rip or record unique items that hadn't previously been digitised. But others were fiercely possessive over anything unique or unavailable online to the point of misdirecting the same way. One guy had a demo cassette of one of their albums and made a fake version just editing the released version to convince people he'd released it when really he was still hoarding it. You really learn a lot about people doing this shit and become quite cynical. In the end I stopped archiving and deleted everything and threw out my physical collection too.
