Maybe higher security prisons, or prisons for more serious or repeat offenders should put the prisoners to work. But the prison I was at is good and should stay the way it is, it’s honestly helping a lot of people and most people, at least most of the guys I knew including me are significantly better off after prison than we were before. We are a bigger net benefit now to society, even with all the resources that went to us, than if we never improved ourselves and just spent the entire time doing labor. However you are right that a lot of people, particularly repeat or more serious offenders, do not improve themselves and just remain a drain on society forever so labor certainly has a place for some prisoners. However too many pussy bigger loving liberals will never let that happen.
Also there was almost zero violence on my prison, and most of it that there was stemmed from petty arguments and disputes when playing sports or games, or just general shittalking. It was like high school in that regard. But no one was getting shivved or even at risk of it happening, because people there still had too much to lose for doing something like that, and we didn’t have any violent criminals in that prison either. So again, I highly recommend it to people to get their shit together.
