It's a cliche now but was very original and funny at the time if you like dark humour. A lot of people didn't know what to make of it on release.

I'd seen this movie memed for over a decade and finally watched it last year. What a letdown. Starts off strong but halfway through it the schizophrenia of the source material just gets too strong and stops taking itself seriously, like everyone involved from the author to the director is so scared of rejection they just fuck it all up on purpose to shield themselves from criticism.
