It's very common in broader software development that your project arrives somewhere else from what you originally aim for, because it's more important for the product you're developing to satisfy the underlying needs, and not just what is assumed at the start to be the appropriate solution. But developing a single indie game for 13 (!!) years is still unfathomable to me. Especially because they have a team working on it, which incurs operational costs e.g. in employee salaries. It's not just some project of a solo dev who works on it in his spare time. I don't know how much was spent on that game so far, but I don't see the people who are funding it making their money back.

Smiling Friends is just as successful as Yolo and Koala Man. So not many people know what it is.
