This is the all-time biggest memory holed film of all time. Critics mostly loved it, and it won Oscars for Art Direction, Sets and Costumes. It was a big deal, the historical epic (think Gone With The Wind or Barry Lyndon) of the 90's in some respects. Not the biggest hit at the box office (casting Meg Ryan was a misstep) but DVDs are next to impossible to find and it never came out on Blu-Ray or 4K so Miramax has a hateboner for it.

to add to that, there are certain shows that are weirdly catalogued, like, that one show called Jo with Jean Reno, when I tried to watch it on amazon it was only available in spanish, and letterboxd cannot pinpoint when it came out, it's like it's out of their database calendar so it defaults to placing it among the earliest pieces of media ever released, the synopsis isn't an actual synopsis but an opinion/review, and when I contacted an amazon representative about the lack of an english language option he or she claimed "we're having issues with that show"

Was popular at the time and during the 90s and had sequels. However I don't see it having a kind of legacy that I would expect given what I remember of the popularity at the time. I see no references, no memes, nobody doing retrospectives. This isnt the same as having no cultural impact because it did. But it has faded away, even from memory.

this is a true memory holed movie, I can't even find it anymore.

It was a movie about a mentally ill adult male with retardation who acted like a child, and he became friends with a little girl. And everybody thought he was a pedophile but he was just retarded and saw the little girl as his best friend. The movie escalates when he tried to hug the little girl on the ground in a park.

I remember Kevin Bacon was in it but I am having a mandella effect cause Kevin Bacon is not retarded im the pedo movie he was in called "The Woodsman", so I am talking about a different movie. anyone know what it is???

>funny that All Star was made for this movie but everyone associates it with Shrek

It is a little debatable that the song wasn't created for Mystery Men... but given that it was the very last track they made for Astro Lounge, and was released May 1999, it's not unlikely that it could have been. The movie was released in July 1999, so the movie itself would have been in post. The track was used in the original Mystery Men theatrical trailer and the music video uses footage from the movie and was made to promote the film. It was still a hot new track when the movie was released. I remember the music video getting a lot of rotation.

The actors from Mystery Men didn't film anything for the music video. Their appearances were made up of footage from the movie, and the few times you see them in the video, it is always from their backsides, because they had stand-ins. But Casanova Frankenstein's 1979 Corvette limousine was used in the music video. The original music video was a bigger hit than the movie. Long before Shrek used it.

>What the film evokes is an age that must have been supremely interesting to live in. Sometimes I think that modern travel and communication have destroyed the mysteries by which we live. The people in this film occupy a world of unlimited choice, playing flamboyant roles, relishing in theatricality, mixing science with superstition, discovery with depravity. And by capturing that energy, β€œRestoration” avoids the pitfalls of pious historical reconstructions and plunges right into the cauldron.

it really is a pity about these movies having jeets in it
it could've been the next John Wick franchise without the jeets

they replaced the bad ass korean singleton with a jeet that kicked the MCs ass and it completely ruined the movie along with a girlboss

I watched Paul (2011) for the first time a few weeks ago and was shocked by how kino it was compared to the usual modern slop. Just goes to show how much higher standards were even 15-years ago. The fact it was shot on film too also helps.
