Its not unrealistic, it was idealistic. What if someone was a president who genuinely had good intentions and good will and not a lot of shady people pulling the strings, with a cabinet and staff that were competent insiders putting in the work.
Along the way it has really sappy dialogue only sorkin could write, some good lessons on civics, and mostly episodic contained story-of-the-week-and-a-b-plot.
It wasn't so long ago that we expected our politicians to work together and compromise in the business of running the country who engaged in partisanship in as much as it reflected the values of their constituency.

This mindset started in the 80s under Reagan-Bush where the GOP had three consecutive landslides. This led them ro believe they had a permanent Republican majority in the nation. When Clinton won in 1992, it completely buckbroke them and it made them lose their minds. New Gingrich was architect of this new total resistance in Congress, but nonpoliticians like Rush Limbaugh were a major part of it too. They just did not consider Clinton to be a legitimate President because they believed the GOP owned that office.
