Dementia isn't like you just get weak and forget what you're saying sometimes. You basically regress to being a baby in an adult's body. In addition to memory, emotions start to go. They get aggressive and scared, or completely non-responsive. I had a family member go recently and he rapidly fell into dementia especially at the end, the last night before he went to hospice care he suddenly got up at 3am after several days of basically being a vegetable and pissed on the floor before stumbling around screaming for help and fighting anyone who got close. They become more than a burden, they become a major hazard and need 24/7 professional supervision.

When I worked with the elderly as a teen, I had a patient whose husband stuck her in care and she almost immediately nosedived. She'd sprint full speed from door to door looking to get out, going until she'd collapse. Actual sprinting too, enough that it was difficult for us kids to keep up. Let me say this and I know it's not something you want to hear, but living with someone who is in the condition of Willis is very, very hard. At some point it becomes a question of normalcy versus martyrdom. And that's the point where it's just sane to protect yourself and the person with the condition by having them sent into a place where they can actually be taken care of 24/7.

With a dementia patient there is no point calling for checkups every day once it’s bad enough m. Or even week. They’re only going to get worse and worse and after a certain point they basically do not recognise anyone or be able to have a proper conversation. Eventually you’re just waiting for the call to announce they’re dead. Because it’s easier than to watch and wait for someone to die a slow death. And in Hackman’s case his primary care person was his wife, who isn’t iirc a mother to any of his kids. So unless they were super close there isn’t that much reason to call all the time. And nobody was expecting her to die or be ill so initially unanswered and ignored calls wouldn’t even cause concern.

My grand uncle basically only sat at home and watched tv after retirement. He had dementia within a couple if years.
His wife was doing volunteer work, cooked at a local pub on weekends, visitited family and friends via train and generally kept up with news and reading. She survived her husband by almost 20 years and died during a heatwave while she was hoeing the dirt in her garden. Bitch was tough old cunt.

So if you're afraid to get it, basically don't neet after retirement and judt stay active. MCT oil allgedely also delays dementia by quite a bit. My doc recommended it to me during my yearly check ups but there are fuck all studies to support it as of now.

My friend had a very wealthy uncle who got dementia and even though be could afford a live in nurse and had a big house and property it still didn't stop him wandering naked in the street. There comes a time to call in the professionals full time, a regular house just can't contain someone that far gone. People don't always understand that it isn't just memory that deteriorates. On several separate occasions she begged my Mom and I to kill her after she realized that she couldn't remember certain details of her life, or how to do things that she had always done for herself. Having spent a decade of my life watching a woman (One of the few I ever truly respected) who flew aircraft, owned her own drugstore, designed, planted, and cared for well over an acre of gardens by herself, and was on the board of directors of a local bank devolve into someone who couldn't remember her own name or form a coherent sentence. I consider it one of the most horrifying ways to die imaginable.

I worked in-home hospice/nursing care for a decade and people with dementia had it pretty good. They are peacefully ignorant of their situation and still enjoy little things.
