Probably, in broad strokes. But there's no denying the show rushed and mishandled it. Not to mention it already cut a whole lot of book characters and storylines, so it absolutely is not the same ending.

Why couldn't they just maintain the quality? The shift was noticeable in season 4, as much as people like to praise that season. The show's success was its downfall. The showrunners were morons who made it their goal to film the Red Wedding and were left with their own cocks in their hands afterward.

Season 2 already nosedived, but they could keep it up as long as they could write stuff based on the first 3 books in the series, which are the best and make sort of a closed arc by themselves.
But books 4 and 5 are all about dealing with the fallout of what happened previously and setting up what's never coming, with no delivery at all.
So when they ran out of good stuff from book 3 to adapt in season 4, which had already been grossly stretched with their own filler plotlines and scenes, and had to pick from books 4 and 5, the glaring flaws Seasons 2-4 already hard were left exposed with no good plots to hide them. Quite the contrary, D&D fully embraced writing their fanfic stories for filler to make things worse.
The truth is, only S1 is truly good.

The only reason I think its possible the book ending might be different is because GRRM loves writing edgy shit and the show ending with a relatively happy ending doesn't fit. It could very well be GRRM intends for some unholy incest rape cannibal cult shit ending to happen that DnD knew wouldn't fly with HBO or the audience.

At this point I feel like the only realistic way George could subvert any expectation is by releasing 2 700+ pages books that are just everyone calming down and sitting for some talks. Basically entire chapters of the slave owners trying to find a better compromise, in Westeros, Cersei and the Tyrell agree that what they were doing is wrong. That's it. No betrayal, no plot twist. Just everyone sitting down and having a nice conversation about everything that happened.
Also those books are released on the same day, so people wouldn't catch on until too late.
