The EU was pants on head retarded a majority of the time, but the great thing about it was it was as canon or not canon as you personally wanted each entry. Everyone had their own personally curated Expanded Universe and everyone was fine with that. It had taken on a bizarre almost mythological quality. I don't honestly think they had a chance even if the sequels had been good. Star Wars as a much a kids personal imagination by that point as it was a movie.
