The story was originally a tv teleplay and its purpose was to entertain people. sell the sponsors products and provide a showcase for actors rather than political subversion. The whole story takes place on one set with the actors the only focus. As many people have pointed out the introduction of the knife by a juror is a violation of evidence rules and would have resulted in a mistrial but they just needed some drama element for the story. It was not a good faith attempt to teach people about courtroom procedures.

When people mention this about this movie I can only think of how important it is that we see absolutely no scenes apart from the jury room.

In other words, we know no better than the 12 men. They have more information then we do at any point in the story. We, the viewers, are looking at their reaction to their own recounting of how the witnesses testified about whatever occured that night. It's a big telephone line.

At the start of the film, we have zero information about the case apart from the fact that 11 men swiftly agree that the boy was guilty. As the movie progresses we understand each guy there had ulterior reasons to vote for guilty, some out of prejudice, or trying to get over with it soon enough. We know this much about them and each and everyone of them agree to change their votes to not guilty in the end.

Whatever we discuss about the woman, the knife, the building, the tram, the motivation, the circumstances of the crime, is going to be through the lens of the 12 men from the jury. At the start, how could you say he is not guilty, if almost all of them said he was? In the same way, if you are to insist that he is guilty in the end, you are disagreeing with all of them, you are more stubborn and petty than they were.

You're forgetting the motives used for the characters. They were all tired, they wanted home because it was a warm day and they wanted to watch some baseball. They were in time pressure, they had a time limit, and once they begun to discuss the matter it was obvious they had no time to fully analyze the evidence as their discussion was sloppy and biased. They were in situation of pressure. That's primarly the reason the movie presents on why they changed their minds. And I'm not cool with that. I don't like the idea of a system where people can change their opinions on a whim, especially not when such critical consequences are at stake. I deem their original stance which they had contemplated over the previous 5 days to be more accurate. To think otherwise would be to think the majority of the jury consisted of dumb ignorant fools who soaked up everything that happened in the courtroom without questioning it.

It's entirely possible the defense didn't bring up the woman not wearing glasses because they had in fact looked into it and found out it wasn't relevant. The jury is not there to decide if the defendant is going to live or die, and if they perceive their part in the trial as such then they are either malicious actors or self-important fools, because it is the state that decides that criminals die and it is the state that will carry out the execution. The task of the jury is nothing more and nothing less than to pass verdict on whether the evidence presented in the trial is sufficient to decide whether or not the defendant has committed the crime he's accused of. From what I understand, each attorney has the right to strike three jurors of their choosing if they find that juror unreasonable. I used up one of the prosecutor's strikes and she got really bootyblasted about it.

I almost regret not serving on that jury because I would have dug my heels in and declared him not guilty which would have at least resulted in a mistrial. I've been called three times.
The first time I didn't even have to show up, I called a number they gave and told I wasn't needed.
The second time I went for two days and actually got to sit in the court room while they selected and dismissed people for jury duty. Kinda fun and was for a kidnapping case. Didn't get selected or even interviewed.
The third time was last summer. I went in for the first day and filled out some paperwork. They took half the people into the court room to begin selection procedures. I was in the other half that got sent home and told to call later that night to check in if we needed to come in the next day. Didn't have to go in.
Got paid like $12 each time.
