>When prompted who would win in a fight between Jamie Lannister and Aragorn, George R.R. Martin gave an interesting response, vouching for his creation in the fight. He explains that Jaime Lannister would likely win the duel purely for the fact that he would show up in plate armor, whereas Aragorn generally only occasionally wears chain mail or leather. "Armor was invented for a reason. It's good to wear armor if you're fighting with sharp pieces of metal."

Is George right? Aragorn isn't capable of fighting someone who's wearing armor??

GRRM can't even remember his own internal logic. Jamie is a great swordsman and has plate armour! Then he has Bronn defeat a guy in full armour. And for all the talk about full armour, there are videos that show how people could move fairly well in it and weren't bumbling idiots. But then he also has Oberyn basically poison The Mountain who was in full armour. So which is it? But Aragorn is simply shown to have: better skills, better weapons, better leadership skills, better fighting skills. And yet GRRM is still like pfft my character beats yours.

Recently someone asked a question to GRRM at a convention about how he is going to die soon and people booed. But all during the panel, GRRM had been a rude and haughty cunt to others, talking about how intelligent he was. The man is a mess.

Aragorn's not wearing a light outfit because he thinks it's the most effective thing for a battle. He's wearing that stuff because he spends nearly the entire adventure traveling on foot. He dons chainmail because it's the only thing that was fucking available at Helm's Deep; the only guy who had access to plate there was the literal king of the realm.

And he also trained with elves and can literally move with such lightness and grace he can traverse thick foliage unseen and unheard for hours at a time. He ran for days across rugged terrain in pursuit of the orcs that took Pippin and Merry. His stamina is incredible and far exceeds olympic level tier men at their physical peak.

Jaime is a 32 year old normie human that's a "really good swordsman", whatever the fuck that means. He would blunder around in full armor swinging and missing the much faster and much more physically adapt Aragorn and gas out in 2 minutes. Aragorn would probably toy with him the whole time too and just let Jaime exhaust himself. And if Aragorn took it seriously he can swing his sword much harder and faster than Jaime can. It'd be akin to a 10 year old dueling at a 26 year old.

Fathack has no understanding of physical activity or fighting. He's the cringiest type of turbo nerd that thinks there is such a thing as fighting smart. He has no idea how exhausting duels are even if you're not wearing anything - even world class fighters need breaks after 2-3 minutes of maneuvering around and swinging fists, never mind how tiring being in full plate whipping a sword around that's constantly being parried by someone much tougher than you would be. Jaime's wrists would be a fucking fire after a minute from all the clashing. The biggest danger a lot of knights faced was becoming so tired they could only lay there helpless from exhaustion after a short while of fighting and having the enemy stab them in vulnerable parts of the armor while too tired to fight back.

As other anons have pointed out, it's becoming more and more clear GRRM either didn't read LOTR or he's a turbo retard autist brainlet (imo it's both)

I agree with you but in this case Aragorn does descend from Elros. In a way you could say it's a literal divine lineage

It's funny how a guy so autistic about lore and worldbuilding he whined about aragorn's tax policy doesn't seem to get anything regarding lore and why jamie's abilities don't translate to any real fantasy setting where superhuman strength speed and magic start becoming factors.

iirc, oberyn poked him in the armpit while the mountain was trying to shield his eyes from the reflected sun.
there are no plate pieces covering the armpit weirdly enough. only mail.
i'm unsure if he struck him the back of the knee but lower tier armour doesn't cover the it. and riding armour doesn't cover the back of thigh area.
pic related is king Henry VIII foot combat armour and you can see the armpit gap.
when he pins him down, he strikes him below the breastplate iirc so the mountain's armour doesn't cover as much as king Henry's armour.

I'd be curious as to what elements exactly makes the world of Asoiaf more grounded than Tolkien.

At the beginning of fellowship we literally spend half the book in a low-fantasy setting where the most supernatural element is the ringwraiths. Gandalf doesn't even show up until they reach Rivendell, which is obviously more fantastical in nature but not out of any magic or otherworldy-power. Meanwhile the fat man has a giant wall bigger than anything observed in human history irl, blood magic and wildfire, which explicitly burns as hot as dragon flame.

In Fellowship the only truly supernatural moments are the summoning of the river spirits against the nazgul, the attack of the watcher outside moria, and the encounter with the balrog. Meanwhile Martin is banging on about white walkers and ice spiders from nearly the first chapter.

There is a reason George said this, and that reason is this, Jaime is the last hero. George has borrowed a lot of plot points from various European mythologies. Irish and Norse in particular. Jaime is mix of Nuada, Tyr and Siggurd or Siegfried. Nuada in particular. Nuada in Irish mythos is the king of the Tuatha who loses his hand in battle and has it replaced with a silver hand, which becomes a working magical hand, that sounds familiar doesn't it. Nuada also had a magic sword made of light, which was also known as the blade of the three women. Jaime has access to a red sword, two in fact. What color was Azor Ahai's sword and what was it called, the red sword of heroes! Now onto the sword of three women, there are three important women is Jaime's life, Catelyn Stark, Cersei, and Brienne of tarth. When Azor Ahai forged Lightbringer, he first used water, this will be Catelyn, and then a lion, which will be Cersei, and then his one true love, Brienne of Tarth. He will survive Lady Stoneheart, he will kill Cersei to become the valonqar, and then somehow Brienne will be mortally wounded, and he will ask her to bare her breast, for he loved her more than anything, and he will plunge Lightbringer into her heart, giving her the gift of mercy. Jaime will be born again as Azor Ahai, wielding Lightbringer, and he will lead mankind against the Others. He will probably die fighting Euron Greyjoy, another character based upon a figure from Irish mythology. Balor of the evil eye.

That's if George finishes this fucking series, and I don't think he will. I hope I'm wrong

More like the character of Strider and the character of Aragorn can be considered distinctive enough to treat them as separate identities of the same persona. Like Bruce Wayne and Batman kinda.

Part of why I'm a little bit hype for the Hunt for Gollum film being talked about in the usual places - though the old fan movie is still rather kino despite being independent media. We don't get to spend a lot of time with Strider, who is very much the fantasy hero we expect of a low fantasy setting. Aragorn on the other hand is very much on the path to kingship after he is acknowledged as such by Boromir, who reminds him that he has duty and obligation to his kin as a leader, rather than as a lone hunter of the wilds.

There's like five kings between the dance with dragons period and the song of ice and fire period. The dragons dying out can't of been that long prior. The British throne had more monarchs than that even in just 200 years.

Are westerosi people retarded?

There's a pirate with a volcano arm, ice zombies, ice elves, dragons, face stealers, necromancy, magic green fire, extradimensional haunted houses or maybe just drugs or both, shadow demons, druidic animal possession, and more by the time of book 5. The only thing GoT/ASOIF is not have it in your face like some normal everyday thing for normies and shitters. It's "rare" but only if you aren't looking for it. Anyone that wants to find magic, often does.

Did he forget Aragorn has far more experience and he fights and wins against superhuman creatures thought-out all of LOTR and finished it as an actual king so might just maybe have access to however much armour he wanted.

Magic was never a facet of life in ASOIAF. Magic in this setting is rare, magic users are rare, it is rare because it is fucking dangerous, that why Ashai is all fucked up, because magic requires lifeforce. Magic mostly stopped when the last dragon died, but there was always a little left, like little puffs of smoke on the wind. There has been way more kings than that. Since Aegon's Conquest was like 300 years before the first book,, there has been like 17 Targaryen kings. The last dragon died like a hundred years before Dunk and Egg. it is heavily implied that the Maesters killed it.

Jaime would lose because he's a "realistic" character

Meanwhile LOTR is fantasy capeshit. Aragon will just stab him through his armor and say something like "oh my sword is magic elf steel folded 1000 times and cuts through anything other than mithril"

I thought this was supposed to be grounded in realism anon. How is the setting meant to be simultaneously so full of magic and wonder and yet we're also expected to take people seriously when they claim it to be gritty and down to earth?

Right out of the gate LOTR is centered around a race of agile midges who can live to be 100+ years without effort and their 40s/50s are akin to being in the late 20s for humans. Aragorn himself is unnatural, being a nearly 7 foot 100+ year old Gigachad descended from ubermensch. Gandalf is a literal angel. Tom Bombadil is some kind of Eldritch being.

All these characters are right there in the first quarter of the first book. Just because none of them are giving birth to shadow demons or wielding flaming swords right out of the gate doesn't mean Middle Earth isn't oozing far more magic and mysticism than Westeros. Tolkien was just better at making his fantastical world seem realistic and plausible and subtle, whereas Fathack is shit writer who can't maintain tonal consistency and wants to pretend his world is down to earth low fantasy while also filling it with ridiculous levels of hackneyed pulp fantasy shit like dragons and zombies and spells whose source or limitations he'll never explain.

Fat retard thinks because tolkien called them "human" they were just some guys.
No Jaime has no chance at all against Aragorn who has 80 years of experience swordfighting. This sounds stupid at first glance but Aragorn has far above average stamina and strength, is far better at fighting and much more determined.
It's a no diff for Aragorn.

There's also the fact that getting hit in armor isn't "free" there is blowback and damage especially if you hit the head. Though you'd rather have a mace or a hammer for that sort of work.

It's not a boxing match, it's a fight with pointy things. In general strength is the bigger advantage than just being nimble, but it's not like in any conceivable match up it wouldn't just boil down to who has the advantage of reach and who could out-maneuver who.

We've been over this a thousand times. Jaime is a prodigy with the sword and easily top 3 in GoT, but Aragorn has several times the experience by virtue of being 90 and is a literal superhuman. The part of his genetics he inherited from Numenor makes him stronger, faster, more agile, gives him more endurance and ability than a regular human like Jamie.

Arthur Dayne WITH Dawn would be a better question.

Has nobody read LoTR? The mere presence of Aragorn in Gondor makes Sauron, the biggest baddest Evil for thousands of years, tremble with fear and blow his load too early by sending his armies away from Mordor to kill him. Aragorn won the war by sheer aura.

Not to mention Aragorn has Narsil/Anduril, the broken part of which he carried with him until it was reforged during the council of elrond. Even if we presume Aragorn is using the broken part in the durl, Jaime's sword is Valyrian steel, whose only magic properties is that it stays sharp and can kill zombies. We know that valyrian steel can be broken and melted down, while Narsil was shattered only by a literal fallen angel and had to be reforged by literal magic used by elves, who also reforged it so that it can never break, so even fighting with the broken portion odds are Aragorn - who is way stronger than Jamie and wielding a magic sword - would probably just break Jamie's mundane sword at some point in the duel.
