This was good.

Yes it was. I preferred Past Lives but Celine Song is 2 for 2. Also been interesting to watch the USA audience not like it much but it's done very well in Europe and the discourse has changed somewhat. Song doesn't play as well in the US as she does in other markets. Also it's funny that this box office for this will catch and surpass Madame Web soon. Dakota redemption.

One thing I liked about it was that it was a "remoralizing" film out of Hollywood. My expectations were very low but I was pleasantly surprised, it reminded me of a good old fashioned movie but it was set in 2025.

Good point. I liked how it dumped on both men and women's expectations in the modern dating culture and defended Chris Evan's character. It's okay to be a white broke guy.

Exactly. It started off with establishing today's culture and I thought that the entire film was going to drown you in cynicism throughout but the main characters had a good arc, growing out of their materialism and coming together in the end. Really drove the message home. It's nice that some filmmakers aren't completely lost in lulu land when it comes to just everyday people. I may have to check out 'Past Lives', I'm unfamiliar with this director.

On another note, Materialists reminds me of another Chris Evans movie - Playing it Cool, but only slightly, the latter was a lot more upbeat and comedic.

I recommend you do check out Past Lives! I'll keep an eye out for that other Evans movie. I only knew him as Captain America but he really worked for me in this movie (as did Dakota, even Pedro didn't annoy me). I think Celine Song is good at getting exactly what she wants out of actors whether they are Korean (see Past Lives) or big names from Hwood.

I haven't seen a lot of his movies but here he wasn't grating at all.

She wasn't bad, but I wanted to see more passion from her towards the end but I assume that's the Korean film school of understated performance holding her back.

I meant Korean film direction. Time to go to bed.

Dakota is a very understated actress. I think she tends to underplay no matter who the director is. I like it, especially combined with her soothing, calm, sleepy voice, but I know that bothers some people too.

let me guess, she chose the poor guy

I think that gives her character some mystery, that subtle distance in her performance even though she's acting opposite her love interest. I admit it's pretty charming.

Yes, and I think it made their fight more powerful (when she declared she hated herself for hating that he was broke). Dakota as an actress raising her voice always draws me in since it is so rare.

If you took away the rape subplot, this would have been a fantastic premise for a romcom, but instead they had to make the audience uncomfortable and take it in a really strange direction

Also my gf said this was "broke boy propaganda" and I'm actually inclined to agree

Americans really love latinx. I watched this movie (it was utter shit) and I logged it on my letterbox profile and took a look at the reviews, and all the white American females were complaining about Dakota choosing Chris Evans over Pedro Pascal.

So, the moral of this story is that females want a man that is willing to wait for you for 15 years while you try living like those poweful women from Sex in the City and once you've failed in life, he is still there like the father who took back the prodigal son

>broke boy propaganda
So you can't even entertain the message of the film for two seconds? Besides, how many people in the West do you think are broke right now, the odds are a romcom is going to be made about poor people. It's nothing new really, that type of story goes way back before film even.

This movie was terrible. The dialogue in this
was so weird, people don't talk like that.
Also, it's absolutely stupid when someone who looks like Dakota talks herself down so much all the time, especially in appearance. At least when the Barbie movie did it, the narrator pointed it out.
Also, she really can't act.
On top of that, she makes stupid decisions constantly. Oh hey, I'm gonna stalk this lady who explicitly told me to leave her alone! Then, even though she's "great" at her job, one bad instance totally obliterates her belief system, despite the fact that she couldn't control the rapist guy.
It really didn't surprise me when I found out this was done by the same person who did Past Lives, because that movie was really dumb.
