Jar Jar. I love that movie. I saw it in the theaters when I was only four year old, and I expected Jar Jar to be some kind of villain based off of his looks. I was hugely disappointed by the way he appeared in the Phantom Menace. Like I said, I love that movie, but Jar Jar was a real negative effect on it. George Lucas says that Jar Jar is good because Star Wars is for kids and kids love Jar Jar. Every single one of my friends hated Jar Jar and we all mocked him relentlessly.

Empire is a great movie on a technical level, but the story suffers by being an interquel lodged between a movie that clearly wasn't written or shot to have a sequel, and a sequel that sucked ass. So Empire ends up being this awkward middle child with a retconned beginning and no proper ending.
It's a shame, but such is the fate of franchising.

I'm aware. Communication with the dead through the force isn't a dealbreaker and can work. But having non corporeal manifestations come in and out of the world able to speak at will really breaks the mythos of the force. Kind of like how in ATLA Aang can see the past versions of himself but he has to meditate in order to communicate with him. They should of kept it in Star Wars to being voices only.

TFA was a rehash of ANH but started off kind of interesting. Rey had a mysterious background, Kylo Ren was a fun villain, Finn had an arc. Then TLJ went off the rails but was still propped up by Kylo Ren. Then TRoS shit the bed. I have no idea what they were doing with that one.

This is the best one. A masterclass in editing, and for a studio blockbuster (granted, still in its nascent stage), somewhat unconventional.

A perfect studio blockbuster. My only problem with this one is that it's a lead in to a much inferior film.

Lowkey the Phantom Menace of the 80's. It doesn't really deliver on the promise of its predecessor, and the filmmaking is huge step down. Also, the only OT film not edited by Paul Hirsch, and it shows.

It still feels like a Star Wars film. It's still shot in that classical style, foreign to modern blockbusters. But boy, it's dull. A watered down RotJ, which was watered down to begin with.

Can't help but have a soft spot for it as a bad movie. It was fun to watch in a crowded theater on opening night. People were howling laughing. It was a good time. This is when Star Wars really just became straight up slop though. It's an animated movie.

Solo is utter crap. It's an "origin" story that fails to show the origins of Han Solo. The very first scene in the film, Han escapes from a Jabba the Hutt like alien and steals a car or a ship or something to evade pursuers. The first scene. Han Solo is already doing Han Solo stuff. I recall something about him making up the name in the cringiest, childish and stupidest way possible, something like "I'm traveling solo... geddit!?!?!" and then some chase on a train with fisticuffs on top of the trains like some 1930's movie. I feel like three would have been sufficient. The battle between Anakin and Tyrannus, Palpatine against Mace Windu in the middle, and Anakin vs. Obi-Wan at the end. Still, the final battle between Anakin and Obi-Wan was very underwhelming despite how much it goes out of its way not to be. It wants to be Duel of the Fates yet it just doesn't make as much sense as that duel in terms of story telling. Like, they're battling over lava and go onto those beams for no other reason than it looking cool. With Duel of the the Fates, it's like Maul had mapped out the area in advance and was leading them to that pit with the specific intention of killing both Qui Gon and Obi-Wan there because he knew it would be more convenient. The final battle in Revenge just felt too on the nose, and, as I said, it's both too much and not enough. I was overall very disappointed with the way it depicted Anakin's becoming Vader. I'm starting to think Return of the Jedi is the most underrated Star Wars film like how Revenge is the most overrated. Return has a very comic book esque feel to it. The best parts of that film are what Star Wars is all about. It has not only the best space battle in the saga but also the most intense and emotional lightsaber fight. They should have gone with the battle on Endor taking place on Kashyyyk instead as originally intended but even the Ewoks aren't enough to ruin that film. It has the best scenes in Star Wars and the moment that Vader kills Palpatine is the most powerful scene in the saga as long as we're not talking about the current version where Vader screams "no."

A 10 point scale doesn't make sense for movies. Quality isn't quite as objective so the higher granularity hurts. The 5 point/5 star system really is ideal because you can only really sense that much in a movie, everything else is personal taste and entertainment value.

Then it's simple, 1 = bad, 2 = mediocre, 3 = good, 4 = great, 5 = amazing.

It's overrated. It's a shitty movie and it doesn't even follow the events of Empire Strikes Back. Vader's character is changed into being emperor's lapdog while in ESB he conspired to overthrow him.
The whole thing about Dark Side doesn't really make that much sense.

The scenes in the Emperor's throne room are very powerful and save the film in spite of everything. When I watch that movie, the scenes with Luke, Vader, and Palpatine feel somehow more real and authentic than everything else in Star Wars, almost as if you're watching real footage of something that actually happened one time a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. And I really do think it has the best space battle. The one in a New Hope is the most iconic for sure but the Return of the Jedi space battle is really more intense and drives home the weight of everything that was hinging on it far better. A lot of people overlook the fact that, while Luke was in Palpatine's throne room, he believed and even hoped that he would die in that room with Palpatine and Vader because he knew that the rebels needed to destroy the Death Star. That's why he held off on battling Vader for so long. He wanted to stand his ground and not give into the dark side in his final moments when the Death Star blew up. It was only when the rebels began to lose that he said fuck it and grabbed his sword. It's highly intense and very well executed.

RoTJ's final duel has the most emotional weight of any in the original trilogy. Luke's love for his father overpowers the dark side's temptation and he refuses to finish Vader off. Likewise, Vader finally redeems himself by choosing to turn back to the light and join his son. It's a perfect conclusion.

The distribution on IMDB kind of proves this. People have little use at all for the 1-4 point section of the 10 point ranking. Intuitively, we bucket movies more in terms of "bad", "mediocre", "good", "great", "amazing." "Good" in this case, or 3/5, is where the real average settles, right around 6/10-7/10. Attack of the Clones was my favorite as a kid, and as an adult I still think it's underrated for being basically the 007 of Star Wars movies. It's very noir, sexy even, and the last hour and a half of the film is totally worth the price of admission. It suffers in terms of dialogue, but not to the extent of Revenge, which everybody loves so much. And it bests Revenge on an emotional level. Anakin seems legitimately really torn up emotionally in that film, and his tendency towards the dark side feels more natural and believable than it does in Revenge.

The extent to which people overrate Revenge of the Sith is absolutely insane. What the fuck is this? Is it really just because of all the lightsaber fights? It blows my mind. I was a few weeks shy of eleven when it came out and I was hugely disappointed by it even then. The storytelling aspect of that film is completely shot and even the lightsaber duels feel somehow lacking. It strangely leans into everything that was wrong with I and II and leaves out what was actually captivating about them, and people just pretend it's a classic. I was so severely disappointed by the way it showed how Anakin turned to the dark side. I mean, I still technically enjoy the movie, but it's by far the worst of George Lucas's original saga.
