Why are cooks angry 24/7?

My neighbor cooks at a fancy steakhouse and hes pissed off all the time. Even when we smoke weed in the backyard hes fuming over some food related nonsense.

Is it mental illness?

It’s how they cope with being stuck as a lame ass cook their whole lives. You live it for a couple years, you fall in to the whole and you realize if you don’t get out, you’re going to be stuck there forever. The ones who gave up and got stuck are trying to cope.
It’s so easy to be “passionate” about food, about cooking. But it’s pretty common sense that if you try to turn a hobby in to a career, you’re going to come to hate the hobby. Be smart, cook when you want for yourself and your loved ones, but a professional chef is just a slave.

They are in a low tier dead end job that commands no respect from others and pays shit money, available usually only to those who are pressed into the situation via having no other options (like not being willing/able to pass or fake a drug test, especially the hair ones, or having felony criminal charges).

The "camaraderie" and getting to rip blinkers in the freezer are the only upsides of the job. It's all they have, so you gotta let them crow on about their Normandy being a bus full of volleyball players that showed up at lunch the other day. It's like slaves singing songs together, if it keeps them working then whatever.

Most cooks are degenerates.
The ones that aren't end up succeeding and making fun of the other ones.

they probably weren't even his original ambitions to begin with, cooking itself probably wasn't - at least not at the local sloptrough. he just failed upward/won by process of elimination and got stuck doing the owner's job for the price of two dishwashers combined
and believe me if the owner/owners don't like his menu decisions, he will absolutely be made to heel like a dog. zero job security even as a middling-to-higher end chef
