This movie had a lot of cool individual parts, but as a whole really falls apart
There's GREAT noir atmosphere and a cool little plot line with the French secret service, neat stuff about tracking and studying Godzilla's movements before he hits NYC, and some neat monster sequences, but it doesn't quite all fit together, on top of getting mixed up with the plot thread of comedically incompetent mayor's reelection campaign, the half assed romance, and the persistent push to turn the movie into a Jurassic Park ripoff, which it ultimately becomes entirely in the third act.

It's just tedious Garethslop, with boring characters and boring ideas. They killed off their one good character early on, and left some lightweight to carry this shit. Fucking Return of Godzilla 1984 has better pacing and more entertainment value.

The kaiju closing the distance and circling with zilla-chan was neat
the lighting showing zilla-chans outline before she became visable was kino
her appearance was kino
but then it all got ruined by leading with a breath attack and not just sheer unadulterated physical violence as soon as she was visable.

Im gussing there was a prior scuffle thst lead to zilla-chan's smokescreen, but the mouth laser should reall be the finale asspull that keeps zilla-chan from dying, and not just tossed out from neutral in such a fashion. Kaiju viciously tearing at one another with their claws, teeth, and spikes is epic.

I will admit that it does have the benefit of having a rival kaiju in it. Gozilla vs Wacky Monster is an absolute staple, and the monster of pregnancy, child bearing, and motherhood is a bit too...just like, kinda a fucking gay JP knockoff of an idea.

Thanks to Zilla appearing in Final Wars, this is how I view Godzilla '98 now. It's like Rodan '56, Mothra '61, or Varan the Unbelievable - A monster that had its own solo film that later got worked into the Godzilla series.
