shareholders, probably. the franchise is profitable and they wanted to milk it some more. you can tell that even Anno had a crisis about the purpose of the movies and wrestled with making soulless cash grabs, because after the 3rd one he completely scrapped all his work on the 4th, fell into a depression, and took several years off the franchise to work on other stuff. by his own admission, he had lost his creative spark and didn't get it back until he did Shin Godzilla. the 4th rebuild is basically him saying it was a mistake and that everybody needs to move on from Eva for good.

meh. he's still responsible for the original series which is one of the greatest achievements of television and film of all time. and he redeemed the rebuilds with 3.0+1.0 imo, although I know that's a controversial opinion. if you followed the production of the movies back then too, he was pretty candid about his depression and creative burnout while making the rebuilds, so I think he's aware it was a misstep and I give him some leeway for that. taking that in consideration and with all the value the original series has given and continues to give me, I haven't lost any goodwill for the guy despite a couple shitty movies. lots of my favourite artists have gone through slumps. that's just me though.

in any case, he's still making movies and working on shows and seems to be much happier and creatively driven than he was while making the rebuilds, so good for him.

big name value project that provided startup funds for khara when it was just getting off the ground, and allowed them to train staff on something. it also let him get the rights to eva away from the desiccated corpse of gainax though that might just have been a later side-benefit. rebuild is ass but if the alternative was an outsourced eva sequel like flcl got.

there is a shade of it especially in the ending of 3.0+1.0. but yeah, it's definitely overstated and it's not THE point of the series (there isn't one singular message, there are several themes). also, even 3.0+1.0 I feel like is more about Anno himself moving on from the series that he was starting to feel stuck in and depressed about. people just self insert as Shinji so they think the "move on" message was directed at them, but Shinji is actually Anno's self insert. he was making peace with leaving Eva behind to do more creatively fulfilling stuff to him.

I like Anno and I hope he actually can do this.
I know he wasn't very much involved with Gundam GQuuuuuuX besides writing a few episodes, but it was good. Sorta hope to see something completely new from him.

Anno created a new animation studio and needed money to keep it afloat as well as pre-established material to train new animators on, so what better way to kill two birds with one stone than a remake of the original Eva?

I really hate this random notion that a set of people have to "ask for" a movie to be made. No one "asked" for most of the highest grossing blockbusters, like no one "asked" for Titanic it was James Camerons idea to make it the way he did knowing people would like it. Most art, even low brow shit, is made out of guesswork that it will resonate with people not because someone "asked for it"

Gainax fucked over pretty much all their staff which is why so many split off to make their own studios, the big two being Khara and Trigger. Imaishi had to wait over a decade for Gainax to be dead enough to buy back Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking rights.
