vampires are easier to do make up/ costume wise. they are also more immediate in understanding and flexible as a concept. I would love a good werewolf movie but the best we got is probably the london one.
Anonymous No.214228834 >>214230024
I love both. But all werewolf stories devolve into a Jekyll & Hide scenario. Think about it.

With vampires, they can have various stories, characterizations and backgrounds. Just narratively, they're on two different levels.

There used to be a new Godzilla movie every year because it was a rubber suit and cardboard city, so those Japs could pump them out at a record pace.

Now they take 2 years to make with super computers and millions of dollars and a sweatshop of 3D artists.

CGI made werewolf movies die out because unless you can use CGI nobody wants a man in a suit

Because werewolves are boring and are more about the person fighting themselves. The vampire character is the character, where a werewolf is separated from the host.

They are a cool flick if you are 19 years old, you are probably too old for them.
And yes they are a little derivative, in the best way, but not so much the matrix but older goth /vampire films films.
Calling them derivative makes it sound like you were too foppish for your own good when you were 19.
Also only the first one

>I always thought they looked like derivative trash that was trying to cash in on The Matrix at the time

Only partially. It was just the popular "look and feel" for a short while. Matrix obviously had a role in it, too, but there's quite a few action movies from that era that have this vibe, with leather, crushed blacks, everyone looking way too serious, etc.

>Are they worth watching in 2025?

When I last watched them, I rated them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 2 out of 10 (in order of release).

1 is fine. It's nothing special at all but it's fine, and it has some strong moments here and there. 2 is unnecessary but it's a direct continuation of the events from 1, so might as well watch it too if you watch 1.

3 is a prequel whose probably only "value" is the real life lore, where 1) they cast a Kate Beckinsale irl doppelganger (Rhona Mitra) to play a character whom Kate's character is supposed to strongly resemble; and 2) in the 1st film, Kate's husband at that time played the bad guy, and Kate divorced him to marry the director. In the 3rd film, this ex-husband of Kate returns to have a romance and a sex scene with Rhona Mitra. "I look your wife from you and now I'm making you fuck her doppelganger on camera!"

4 is essentially like a bad videogame. It's also something like 1:15 without the intro montage and outro credits. Also, this is the part where the series tried to be more SCIENCY about vampires and werewolves instead of mythical, and shat the bed by being inconsistent.

5, despite being bad, has some good British actors chew the scenery, and a surprising amount of fun cheesy one-liners.

"I think that..."
"Don't think, you'll hurt yourself."

I also think the series lost some of its important visual grit by going from a kino film look to shot-on-digital. Even though it never fell to the trashiest possible levels of the latter.

Vampires come from myths and old literature so there's more room for creative writing when you produce media about them. Werewolves are always reduced to some generic cursed monster. I did really enjoy the first two underworld films + rise of the lycans for creating some original lore and trying to make werewolves more interesting.

Are there any films that explore vampires in very old times? Not modern or medieval, but something like antiquity, or even prehistory, where "some human-like thing apparently hunting the local tribe of humans" isn't all too different from any other spooky animal, that is to say, where the narrative doesn't need to separate the supposedly-supernatural vamprire from natural threats.

Exactly, and that's why I gave Underworld a pass back then. I liked The Matrix when it came out, but then every movie started copying it and I got annoyed by it really quickly. At the time I especially disliked when that kind of dual handgun slomo leather super serious style was mixed with horror, it's one of the main issues I had with the RE movie, even though I was a RE fan, to me the combination of horror and action just didn't work well together.

>Because werewolves are boring and are more about the person fighting themselves. The vampire character is the character, where a werewolf is separated from the host.
Which is kind of retarded if you think about it. Vampirism is also supposed to be a curse. A person sold his soul to the devil for eternal life and now has to take the life of others to sustain themselves. Instead people treat it like some fucking video game status change (+STR +AGI needs to drink blood every now and then).
I like the way D&D treats vampirism. As a curse that twists ones personality. Someone who loved someone else becomes a stalker/yandere. Someone who loved his country and was a patriot becomes a Tyrant obsessed with HIS vision of the country, etc.
Of course vampirism has gone through being a metaphor for everything from AIDS to fucking dependance for oil (Daybreakers) so whatever.

This. Ninjas are just glowies in black suits and often have to take suicide missions and are in fact raised to be literal fucking tools in a lot of stories. Pirates are fucking assholes, but they are FREE assholes out for booty. BIG FUCKING DIFFERENCE.
