Can you really order a sandwich without the crust in the US? The waiter will oblige and cut it just for you? Or is it just a movie trope? In my country the waiter would just laugh and probably spit in it for the audacity of even asking for such a silly request

People in this thread have clearly never worked in the service industry before. It's not the waiter who decides what is on the menu and modifications to it, that comes from the chef only.
