The same thing that happened to any industry: it became possible for many more people to produce content and to get it out there, with much fewer middlemen.

It happened with music, at somewhat different times depending on the genre, but it did happen.

It sorta-happened with movies. The only gatekeepy thing that movies have is the cost. You can't make a movie (that you yourself will find acceptable) for pennies. There are rare artistic exceptions but generally you can't. But you can make youtube sketches and themed channels and other movie-tangential work, and flood youtube with that instead of full-blown movies.

But music, you *can* make that nowadays for (figurative) pennies. You can flood Spotify / Beatport / etc with tons of shit with very few barriers. Same with porn. Turns out that horny people will pay for fucking anything as long as it seems to be produced by the girl herself (regardless of whether it's true). Doesn't matter how objectively shitty it looks. People will pay simply because it's a bad selfie instead of a studio photo done by someone who knows how to hold a camera.

If making a feature-length narrative film was similarly easy, you'd have a similar total death of film as a mainstream medium as soon as it became feasible to distribute them (so, circa 2010-ish, technology-wise).
