Prey had a really dumb Predator. I always thought that one of the main characteristics of a Predator is their cunning. It cut its own arm off. Fuck that movie. Thats not the same at all. Mystery box writing sets up a mystery that is essential to the plot and must be explained at some point, even if the writers don't know what the explanation is. Whereas unexplained things in horror don't need to be explained and can even add to the experience if they aren't. The alien in Alien exists and is terrifying, you don't need to know where it came from or how it became what it is to be scared of it.
