I feel like the gore and deaths in this movie are over the top dark and mean-spirited. It has such a malicious and cruel vibe to it that the rest of the franchise doesn't. I realize this is a strange criticism for a horror franchise that has always been violent, but I don't know how else to explain it. It seems out of place and like it was made to be gore porn above all else. I hate the direction it took David and Shaw after Prometheus and the way it basically makes David a slasher movie villain.

The big mistake was thinking there needed to be a prequel trilogy. The original concept for Prometheus was fine and still left the possibility open for another prequel movie while laying the solid foundation for the first film.

Earlier concepts for the sequel had it where Noomi was actually going to be alive for it, or at least for part of it, living among Engineers, or whatever that subrace of Engies were. But then Engineers would start mutating, and basically all-in-all the sequel would have been more monster-packed that Prometheus was. All kinds of monster mutations. Prometheus on steroids. That would have been nice. It really hurt the movie that Noomi wasn't part of it. Then Ridley marred it even more by turning the last act into an abbreviated version of Alien's last act, due to studio pressure or mandate.

I actually enjoyed it a lot, I don't care what you think.

I think this is more a fault of the screenwriters, but yeah Ridley didn't care that much. he more so wanted to make a big, good looking space horror, and maybe the studio/screenwriters were intent on jamming xeno/facehugger stuff in haphazardly regardless of whether it fits in the story or with the themes, the "bigger ideas" Ridley wanted to direct.

The Alien timeline is just generally breaking down as we get further and further into the real life future. Back in 1979 when Alien first came out, the year 2122 was 163 years away. That’s far enough away that you really don’t have to think much about what happens between now and then, it’s just “the future”. Also 1979 was only about six years after the Apollo program ended so there was still reason to believe commercial space flight was going to be a thing pretty soon. Now, 2120 is only 95 years away and we still haven’t gone back to the moon. So everything in the Alien canon has to get awkwardly crammed into the thirty years or so between 2090 and 2120.

In the lore pieces I read somewhere (I think it was a prologue they cut) it's said they found the Gold Goo and used to seed life. This resource ended and they couldn't find more so they created the Black Goo but that only made monsters (aka the xeno). Now I don't remember the order of things after that but at some point their dogmas shifted and they started worship the xenos as the perfect lifeform and went into some sort of holy war against all other forms of life, using the Black Goo to kill everything they previously created. One ship was sent to Earth but it crashed in that planet they found in Prometheus. Why they left a map for that planet? Probably a plot hole after they rewrote the script a thousand times, who knows.

There was one Engineer left in stasis on LV-223. The rest were killed or escaped to Planet 4 or somewhere else.
It's probable that the Engineer in stasis was not even awake during the fuckups that led to LV-223 station being overran and evacuated to begin with 2000 years ago.
