how do I stop this? I want to watch something new but I will stop new things sometimes to go back to the sopranos loop, like a fixation. Sometimes I feel trapped

Build more loops. Try adding X-Files and Seinfeld.

this show seems too depressing to get into
I dunno I'm faceblind all those Guiginos, Barbarodis and Beppis all blend together

It's pretty funny for the first four or five seasons, then yeah, it starts hitting hard.

This. Never hurts to have a playlist of a few things you like to break it up a bit.

I'm in the same boat as you.

The Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy miniseries (and the Smiley's People sequel) is the only TV series I KNOW that matches intellectually, although there's nowhere near as many laughs and thrills. Also a few of the sopranos writers wrote for northern exposure, so maybe I'll look that one up. Also twin peaks comes highly recommended.

I tried Mad Men but couldn't get past episode 3... very dull show, nor does it give you much to think about. Le Carre had something interesting to say about the cold war and its competing players, both in terms of realpolitik and ideology, and how it pertains to our lives (mostly women). Mad Men just seems like "women were treated unfairly" and I'm like....... yeah, I know, thanks

Have you tried Twin Peaks? Sopranos was obviously inspired by it in the dream episodes, more surreal moments, etc.

I'm a complete Lynch virgin, it always seemed a little too hip for me

Lynch is pretty awesome. I would at least watch the pilot and see how it sits with you.
