The Exorcist isn't that scary. It has good cinematography, but it isn't scary. More gross than scary, which is still its own kind of repulsion.

what are some good sci-fi horror kinos? I've enjoyed everything from The Substance and The Thing to the when Black Mirror or Star Trek have dropped the occasional Horror gem.

The Exorcist might be the most overrated horror film of all times.
It might have shocked (not scared) religious boomers and now christian larper zoomers have deluded themselves into thinking it's the scariest thing since the proclamation of emancipation, but that doesn't make it the best.
It's competent, and everything about its craftsmanship is good, but that's not enough for it to be rated as it is.

Same with Rosemary's Baby. Took me three attemps to get through that slog.

I loved Halloween as a kid, but whenever I rewatch it I can't over how cheap the film looks. So much of it is so lazily shot, as if they shot it over a couple of weekends (which they probably did). It's one of Carpenter's lesser works from his glory days, but people treat it as being in league with the Thing.

I don’t even see this as a horror movie. It’s a deeply personal film about faith and character study. It’s a commentary on the faith in a rapidly modernising world of broken people, technology, cynicism and evil. It’s a fantastic movie.

I also enjoyed all the other films you mention; in fact Halloween and Alien are among my favorite horror films. I have no problems with slow films. Carpenter has a lot of great soundtracks though. Both Halloween and the Thing are horror movies. The latter is considerably better, and I think a lot of films from Carpenter's heyday are better than Halloween. Saying it's the best horror movie of all time seems like a stretch.
