Close order linear warfare like this was literally the dominant form of warfare for like 300 years. Infantry needed to be densely packed like this and armed with bayonets because it was the only way they could hope to stand up against a determined cavalry charge, which otherwise would completely decimate them.

Imagine you're a peasant who's been given a shitty musket that that has a realistic range of maybe 100 feet and misfires like 10% of the time, and a week of crappy training, and there's a guy on a 2000-lb horse with a lance or a saber is charging straight at you at 30 miles/hour. If you miss or merely wound him, you're going to die fucking horribly. Nobody is that brave, and 90% of them would piss their pants and drop their gun and try to run and hide in a ditch (and then probably die with a lance in their back because you can't outrun a horse). The only hope to keep people from breaking and fleeing under that sort of stress is to put them shoulder to shoulder with their fellow soldiers in a dense mob, because people feel safety in numbers.

TV and films aren't able to accurately portray the cavalry aspect of this type of warfare because obtaining the necessary quantity of horses and experienced horsemen capable of carrying out era-appropriate cavalry maneuvers would be a ludicrously expensive proposition, while getting together a bunch of reenactments together for an afternoon and telling them to march around a field and shoot some guns is a hell of a lot cheaper.

Complete nonsense. Muskets were only inaccurate compared modern guns which are extremely accurate. Muskets were more accurate than a bow (which couldn't penetrate armor) and far more deadly, plus the bayonet gives you a stabbing spear (as you mentioned).

One problem with cavalry was that it was borderline impossible to control the majority of the troopers, so after the initial charge they had to spend time rallying or risk getting counter charged

What actually happened was
-Opening fire at high (still effective) range - in this way, both sides are on roughly equal conditions
-Opening fire at high range, slowly advancing inbetween salvoes - in this way you slowly advance and increase pressure on the enemy, while also avoiding the smoke from your own fire
-Advancing without firing (or often, firing at very close range in the end), but then at higher speed than shown in the film. This is for special tactical situations when you need to take that position right fucking now, not how a normal engagement is done.
