Not to sound pretentious but art is even better when you know what the artist is doing.

Scenes get bogged down on studio lots a little too much. Also the ending was stupid, making a historical playground was novel in 2009, but not so much the third time around.

Didn't love it when it came out but now it's my second favorite Tarantino (i'm partial to basterds), it gets better with each rewatch. Should've been his last movie, you can tell even he thinks there's no way he's gonna surpass it.

He actually just spends a good deal of the book elaborating on known government programs and assassinating the original Bugliosi narrative (which is fine), then makes the most tenuous link between them and Manson, marrying it to the most generic MK Ultra narrative that's been around for ages without actually committing to naming anyone alive. He has almost no experience with Manson himself unlike Schreck who was in contact with him for decades. O'Neill is most likely a hack, especially when you realize how much of the book relies on him personally contextualizing people turning him away as evidence of a coverup.

I didn't like any film by Tarantino between Reservoir Dogs and OUATIH except for Django. OUATIH is supremely comfy, thematically varied, visually interesting and a perfect mixture of upbeat and melancholy imo. And yeah, I enjoyed watching Cliff Booth smash hippy skulls.

I wouldn't deny Tarantino is a master, I'm just too stupid to really understand what theme he's going with. Like, I can watch Reservoir Dogs, or Pulp Fiction, or Jackie Brown but it never really clicks for me beyond the immediate story being told. The "what am I supposed to take away from this" part always vexes me

the movie is just too damn comfy, i love how you can rewatch it over and over again. Tarantino makes this as his version of a hangout movie, where you just want to see the characters hang and talk shit. Scenes like them watching the tv episode or watching cliff at home feeding the dog or the discussions between cliff and rick while the former drives the later is incredible.

It's like the old Looney Tunes referencing old cinema. You might not get the reference, but you know it's a reference to something. That's basically Tarantino's work. He gives new life to old things he used to love, even when he knows the audience probably won't understand is, simply because he love it

If you always go into a movie thinking you should take something away that's meaningful or impactful to the human psyche; you might be watching movies for the wrong reason. Tarantino admittedly makes movies for himself, he just wants to make movies he can enjoy and watch because he thinks that's cool. When you take that into account, take what inspires him, understand he's autistic and loves to insert things he has seen or saw. Then you might start to understand his movies a bit more.

Take Tommy from Kill Bill. Bill says "I like his hair.". Well you can look at DePalma's Carrie and the character Tommy who has fantastic hair in the movie. Tarantino loves DePalma. Earl McGraw says Beatrix looks like a "blood splattered angel", well so does Carrie after getting doused in blood. And then look at Tommy, with that hair. You can almost hear Tarantino saying "I like his hair" about Tommy. The dude is a dork. And he's great.

Bruce was full of himself but he was still a legend and a genuine martial artist.

Tatantino killed the legacy of Bruce Lee with that scene, it is distasteful. Bruce deserves all the respect because he was one of the actors who pushed martial arts films to a new level and also made that genre popular in the western world.
It doesn't matter if he could actually fight or if he was an asshole, what matters is that in this movie Tarantino was paying respect and homage to the greats of Hollywood with the exception of Bruce Lee.

its definitely got a style thats hard to match, i thought id be bored watching Brad pitt drive around LA but i wasn't. the ending was hilarious, the scene with bruce lee is hilarious, and leo being a big baby the entire movie was hilarious. margot's parts were the slowest, but its a pretty big payoff at the end.

His best OST, his best cast, seemingly infinite HW references, his best period piece, best camera edits, best mountain out of a mole hill script, best vibes.

I was turned off initially by the revisionist history thing, but it works to his favor of highlighting the blood on the tip of a blade, only to clean to a shine by the conclusion.
