people in the 20s dressed nicely because there was nothing to fucking do. imagine if the only electric appliances in the entire world were lamps and clothes irons, all music was big band music with warbly vocals, and all the novels were about sailing. you'd do just about anything to stay occupied, including spending 30 minutes dressing up in a wool suit just to go for a walk
