Probably no. Although I used to be an extreme alkie, 0.7 a day was a standard for me. And I had pretty bad thoughts about killing people in brutal ways, mostly people that wronged me in some way.

The roadkill thing wouldn't have been bad in and of itself. I'm sure plenty of professional taxedermists got their start by picking up roadkill without becoming serial killer weirdos. What I would blame the parents for however is how they basically ignored him for most of his life, especially when they abandoned him to live by himself as a teenager. Not only did this give him issues with feeling unwanted, it gave him to opportunity to kill his first victim in that empty house. If you watch his interviews, you see his main psychological issue was fear of abandonment. Killing people was weirdly incidental to his main goal, which was to have a lover who would never disobey or leave him. He never got over the childhood feeling that his parents didn't actually care about having him around, so he stacked corpses because they could never abandon him.

Lionel was not a good person but I do have some sympathy for him; Joyce was definitely worse. She seemed to want to actively fuck up the family by openly displaying her mental illnesses in front of her children. Lionel basically gave up on his family out of weakness, but I don't envy his position of having to deal with a suicidal BPD nutcase for a wife.

It is interesting to note how Lionel became Jeffrey's staunchest defender, almost as a way to overcompensate for his earlier abandonment. Part of Jeff's self-destructive tendency was to get this parental attention imo. I wonder if he ever thought about the weird twist that his killings brought them closer together this way.
