He was lucky but the entire series tries to paint him as an intelligent survivor that gets success deliberately because he exploits advantages and think very actively. Like in the book it opens with nearly everyone on the ship rotting from scurvy/starvation and in his internal monologue he notes he's one of the only guys that still has all his teeth because he was starvation mode rationing his food from the get go.

It should be noted the original author was a POW of the Japanese in WWII. This seems to have left an effect on him and resulted in a lifetime of stories about western men surviving oriental cruelties and being rewarded with prime yellow pussy. Wonder what happened in that prison.
