born in 1986, use to watch the re-runs so much before school in the morning while I was getting ready. Wanted to be Zach.

I re-watched them when I was older and I thought they held up. Made me laugh. I noticed the brain washing stuff going on but chose to ignore it. Can't give any examples but if you watch it you will know what I mean.

You had to be there. I watched it as a preteen when it was on NBC. It was in no way reflective of real life or how school or socializing works. It was never, ever funny. I watched it because it was on. I knew it wasn't good. We had basic cable and HBO and that was a pretty good package back then. But really we didn't watch much TV. We played outside riding bikes, shooting hoops, walking to the lake, etc.
Saved By the Bell is a weird time capsule of what some weird facets of mainstream tv looked like. Without shit like Full House and Bell we wouldn't have Tim and Eric and sketches like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4csRoGP0V8

Is there a decent quality version of the saved by the bell collage years opening song?

I always thought that sounded like an anime opening for some reason.

Exactly. Premises like that are what was so retarded about the show. And the way they portrayed "nerds" and "jocks" was insultingly one-note. The pocket protector and the shrill, nasally voice, the thick glasses and yet still squinting for some reason. The hullking football player with the letterman's jacket who actually says "Duhhh".
These people do not exist in real life, and yet there's this stereotype of them that would be on tv and in movies. No nuance or humanity, just extremes.

But it wasn't "weird". If you're younger than 30 you really can't know what it was because you're viewing it through a completely different lens. It was presented as a reality. At the time no one called them on it. It was just a daytime kids show no one bothered to analyze or review. I remember the weekly TV insert that came in the newspaper had the front page photo of Zack and Slater standing at the lockers about it and called it "a show about insensitive teens". That's it, there wasn't an article, it was just announcing this show was on and they were in high school now.
We can look back on it and it seems weird, but everyone just accepted things before the internet. There was no discussion or awareness of it outside of teen girl rags like Tiger Beat where they had "heartthrob" posters to cut out of these guys. Do they even still make magazines like that anymore? The "Coreys" were all over those things. THAT seemed weird to me even at the time. Because boys I guess had Nintendo Power and Mad Magazine. I have no idea what I'm rambling about. Because I'm a "boomer" in his forties.

Yeah, it's not really that kind of funny. Just like Saved By the Bell and Full House don't make anyone laugh either.
I'm sure some facebook wine aunt type would genuinely laugh at something "cute" on Full House, but I don't actually know anyone like that; only that they exist and the world has a lot of them.

Yes, I know. But I really demand a little more characterization. If you are entertained by that kind of thing I envy you. I find it insulting. John Hughes movies are shallow and simple and they can have rounded out nerds and jocks. That might be too complex for you, you lucky dumb bastard.

Nta but it was just stereotypes. It was extreme, but it was fun. Rewatching it I just think it's nice to see how the kids all love each other and it's one of those things where I'm like "wow I wish I had friends that cared about me like this".

Eh, the first season of the show has some kinda surreal moments. Over time, it got more normal and was more about the interpersonal relationships of the week, but the early episodes were more just about like "hey, here's this wacky thing happening at school this week." Early on it was more like a live action cartoon. Understandable that the show progressed the way it did, given the age of the actors. Just made more sense to start leaning towards shows about people dating each other rather than middle school type stuff.

It's entertaining to see all the goofy and unhinged things in old TV shows, but I think this is the progenitor of all those pointless multi-hour-long video essays that take children's media way too seriously. The writers of Saved By The Bell probably had to bang out like 30 episodes a year and didn't treat it like high art, whatever ways they could contrive a plotline together they did. Treating the characters as real humans is missing the point of a children's show, it's an illogical fantasy for kids with undeveloped brains
