It either eats - organic and inorganic material (uses acid to dissolve it and then builds its armor out of it) through the mouth and nutrients through the vents on its back that function like filters OR builds a cocoon like the one in Romulus (the wall pussy) that attaches to the power grid of the ship/station and uses that energy to grow it. In the original Alien movie production, there was an early idea for the xeno to raid food cabinets. It wasn't put into the film though because it took away from the mystery and made it seem like a silly pest animal. I can understand that it would've ruined the shock of the reveal if we were shown the thing munching on cereal as it grows to full size.

Well, that's one source and it's cool that they try to invent ways for the xeno's biology to make sense, but these comic book, video game and novel sources always seem to go with the most boring options. If I had a say in it, I'd show the xenomorph eating a lot of scavenged processed food and human corpses the next time there's one growing from chestburster to full size. There's the whole theme of us and the xenos being a part of the food chain, with the xeno being on top, yet supposedly the xeno does not eat? Even Kirsh talks about how humans are food, which clearly foreshadows the xenomorph.

Ridley is executive producer of alien earth. There's an argument to be made Disney wouldn't want him making a film that confuses things now, if earth is going a different way to Ridley's prequels idea. They also made romulus which was a straightforward sequel which may show their film intentions. That said, Ridley still has some ties and his name carries star power which would put seats in the cinema.
