Part of growing up is learning bants. He's not abusing Eric, he's challenging him, and only once Eric learns to truly fight back and match his father in banter, will Red respect him.

Nowadays we have technology, my high school friend group is still intact through a discord server. I guess back then they could have telephoned but it's too much work and not much to talk about anyway. The advent of group calls, video, and screen sharing made socializing remotely so much better.
