Nah that's actually a fake internet myth. The real story is that Star Wars originally had another editor, John Jympson, who was doing such a crap job cutting the material together that George Lucas fired him midway through the shoot. Then after filming wrapped George Lucas hired 3 new editors to help him re-cut the entire film from scratch.
Over the last 20 or so years the internet's turned this into some "disastrous first cut" which George Lucas himself edited that the editors (usually George's ex-wife Marcia alone) then somehow magically saved in spite/behind George's back but that's complete bullshit. The version that George Lucas had a hand in editing and was calling the shots on was the re-cut version (aka the version you've seen.) There is no "disastrous FIRST cut" as Jympson was fired before filming was even finished, it's just a collection of random scenes that had been shot up to that point. And finally while yeah one of the new editors was George's then-wife, Marcia Lucas, she left the project early to go edit New York, New York instead. She only edited about 2 or 3 scenes. She also fought to keep those Biggs and Luke scenes in the movie too lol, it was George who wanted to cut them.
I know where you've got this from but it's complete bullshit. Anything you've heard to the contrary is based on misunderstanding/misinterpreting those above events. Oh and the bit about the Library of Congress isn't quite true either - that site (SaveStarWars) is full of misinformation. In reality the Library of Congress has always had a print of the original Star Wars - you can set up an appointment and go watch it right now if you're in the area. That was just a Star Wars fan making shit up on the internet (again)
