Science means things change, because you not only need proof, you need to replicate (or approximate sometimes) the results. Scientific shit gets shot down all the time, and just because you don't like it, doesn't make it a lie until it can't be replicated. Science is the scientific method applied to claims.

For example, saying vaccines cause autism is seen as retarded because the science (read: replication of results) is not there. I just learned Tylenol may cause autism and because it's a new claim (at least it's new to me) it can be seen as valid up until it can be proven true or untrue if the results of that claim aren't replicated.

I think it's not just "woke" writers, it's because they're also of a new generation of writers. Someone like Joss Whedon was fresh and new for his time in the 90s but now that type of person is commonplace and also trying to be "fresh" and make their own version of characters.
