It truly is absolute shit. People just don't understand that the Coens are classic trolls. Most likely because of their early lives. They did it with Fargo - informing audiences that it was a "true story" even though it wasn't, and they did it again with this.

90% of the film is almost unbearably-tense; a "thriller" in every sense of the word. Then, a particular act happens off-screen, the sheriff decides he's too much of a cowardly-faggot and drops his pursuit, and all we're left with is the motto, "hurrrr, it really IS no country for old men!"

Joel and Ethan Coen took a great, big, steaming dump on your upturned, salivating faces. And you cried and begged for more. Eat shit. You're obviously good at it.

the point of this movie is that violence and the law of the jungle always applies even if you aren't aware of it or equipped to deal with it, so does chance and you can never really have fate in your hands, the point of refusing to play along with chigurhs cointoss, chigurh almost dying in an accident, llewelyn outplaying chigurh but getting caught by the low-tier cartel goons anyway, the old sheriff feeling so outmatched and then hearing from his cousin things were always tough, nothing ever changed.

It's interesting to compare this film to a lot of the really early Westerns. It's crazy how pessimistic Westerns became within that time from that point of view. No Country takes a ton of Western story tropes and subverts basically all of them in a really cynical way. Obviously there are a lot of other pessimistic westerns before as well as after, but No Country sort of represents the epitome of this to me.

Llewellyn, chigurh, moss, and woody are all great characters. They are western style stoicism and they're convincing. Wife is good too. Then you have the individual side characters like the motel lady and store clerk who are perfect and very real feeling for their individual scenes. Everyone loves the did I stutter lady. Even the Agua mexican is iconic. Characters do not need to have layers and layers of depth to be good of which only the sheriff really does.

Chigurh represents elemental, universal laws/forces, he's not simply an evil, psychopathic "common" criminal. Also represents the unfeeling indifference of nature/the universe.

Nolan's Jokester is just a clever criminal who babbles about le chaos pseudo-intelligently, setting up silly dilemmas like the two boats and burning the pile of cash. Why? Because it's heckin epic and slightly "more interesting" (lol!) than Marvelslop, I guess? Really gets the MCU-brained noggin joggin, as the kids say.

Bardem's acting was better too, and he didn't need to kill himself with drugs to get the Oscar. The Academy gets their awards right sometimes at least.

People were so mad when I saw it opening weekend. Big audible "what the fuck was that" declaration at the end. As you said, the Coens always do this. They made everyone mad with Lebowski after Fargo too. Ebert gave it a bad review (only to change his mind a couple of years later and call it a masterpiece)

I stopped reading BM after about 45 pages, don't remember why because I quite liked it. The diction/word choice alone makes it interesting, and it'd be a bit tricky to convey that via film. I guess the characters could use some colorful dialogue. McCarthster must have read so much of Southern and Western US dialects, Spanish dialects, a bunch of Latin, French, German, etc. That aspect of the book is impressive and activates my almonds.
