i first watched the 1920's Phantom about 10 years ago on this big DVD set of public domain horrors, and honestly I was blown away by it, it had a strangely modern feel to it, it also seemed really complex in that there was a whole bunch of action scenes and shit like the Phantom swimming in the sewers breathing through a pipe and setting elaborate supervillain traps, but how come movies after the silent era don't feel like that again until maybe the 60's or so? Even better example is the stuff Buster Keaton did. Like in the 30's and 40's and 50's movies start to feel way tinier and more stiff with no real action (barring a few examples of course).
