undoubtedly that is one of his great strengths, but I think the idea that the jokes are meant to be bad is a red herring. "The light was on" is a great punchline, and I will die on that hill. His stand up is also good in a more classical sense. Ultimately I don't think the debate is about whether or not Norm Macdonald is funny. It's more about what stand up comedy should strive to be/do.
