The quality of sandwiches and meals in general is superb in France. My guess is that he bought the baguette from a bakery and asked the cafe waitor for an extra plate for his roll. In France it is cheaper to buy your lunch from the bakers because the baguettes are only about 80 cents each and its a whole day's worth of carbs.

I think part of this was being a recovering addict, he tried to find joy in the small things to get away from the huge rush of drugs.
I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing in itself but you need to go after the big things in life too after you recover. A wife. Kids. A life you're content with.
I think a bigger part of why he killed himself though is because he travelled so much he destroyed his marriage and missed most of his daughter's life. Having a terrible girlfriend while still going through a grueling filming schedule for whatever reason was probably just the straw that broke the camel's back.
