Reporting back. I've now seen all of Oz Perkins' dictatorial offerings. I have mixed feelings about this one. It had beautiful photography and framing but sound design left wanting, as I've come to expect from him. Lillis' and Krige's screen presence carried it in large part, and the dreadful, haunting atmosphere did the rest. Even though I felt like I knew what would happen (and I was right), there was enough mystery to keep it engaging.

Other reviewers have noted that the dialogue and narration feel stilted, awkward, and forced; and they are correct; but this is obviously intentional since it is intended to be a fairy story.

The opening sequence immediately put me off as it made me think this would be an explicitly feminist film, but it's a bit more nuanced than that. It is more about the empowerment and liberation of youth rather than of women. However, there is a black in it, which I found entirely inappropriate and uncalled for. Fortunately he only gets a few minutes of screen time.

Better than I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in The House, but not as good as The Blackcoat's Daughter or Longlegs. 6.5/10

Of course, I follow up on all recommendations because I appreciate someone taking the time to make one. I think the anon recommended it because he wanted me to throw away my respect for Steven. However, it just affirmed my feelings about him, which is to say that he is almost psychotically obsessed with filmmaking specifically. And he said as much in his answer, about how he has to be optimistic about the future of cinema because he doesn't know how to do anything else, which I believe is the reason for him perhaps cynically giving a completely realist and economic answer outlining how to keep audiences going to theatres, unlike everyone else who waxed poetic. I enjoyed The Zog's answer as a counterpoint to Steven's, because he's the complete opposite. The Zog doesn't care much about the form of the art, just the ability to create art in general, so he gave his unbothered "Cinema is the friends we made along the way" response. But Steven is not like that, he can only terms in think of the cinemagoing experience, so that's why he said he doesn't want to make movies about kids growing up or childhood or jerking off or something. Which is funny, of course, because his last movie is exactly that. Maybe he felt free to make a surefire non-moneymaker because he's not so optimistic about the future of cinema anymore in this streaming era. I know I'm not.
