I thought that the Japanese cartoons were the worst medium but somehow highly prominent directors take inspiration from it?

Aronofsky never hid his love for Satoshi Kon, he even wrote a Eulogy for him that was printed in Japanese media.
To use that tub scene he purchased the remake rights to Perfect Blue.

Aronofsky tried but failed to purchase the rights to Perfect Blue. Kon was surprised when he saw the "homage" and thought of it more as his work being copied. He remained bitter about it even complaining years after the fact.

TDKR is an adaptation of multiple stories, mainly Knightfall (where Bane breaks Batman’s back), The Dark Knight Returns (the older, retired Bruce coming back), No Man’s Land (a Gotham cut off from the outside world), and even Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities
