The YouTube channel Captain Midnight pointed out that you can not get attached to characters you only see a couple hours of every few years. You need them in your living room every night. Or else you won't care what happens to them. Best of Both Worlds hit so hard because you had spent over 75 hours with Picard by that point. Of course you want to see if he makes it out alive.

Just finished season 1 of Voyager, I thought it was pretty good. There were some mediocre episodes but that's par for the course for a first season.
